When it comes to biking, Abergavenny is surrounded by hundreds of quiet lanes most of which offer spectacular views of the rolling Welsh countryside.
If you’d like to get away from the roads altogether it is possible to ride on parts of the Monmouth and Brecon canal towpath but this does require a free permit – further details from the British Waterways website. An alternative is to use the Sustrans cycle path that runs north and west from Llanfoist through Govilon and up to Brynmawr.
If you fancy a more challenging ride it is possible to link four of the castles in the area (White Castle, Skenfrith, Grosmont and Abergavenny). The route is described here. There are also a number of free downloadable road cycling route maps at www.bikebasewales.com
There’s also the UK’s most exciting downhill & freeride centre. The ultimate mountain biking experience set in the heart of the breathtaking natural beauty of the Black Mountains. www.blackmountainscyclecentre.com Well worth a visit.
Bikes & Hikes have depots in Brecon town centre, the Canal Basin and Talybont, perfect for quick bike hire as well as guided mountain biking. They also do servicing and repairs as well as sell maps and kit. bikesandhikes.co.uk
